On 28th January, 1915, the 4th King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalion of 80 Brigade, 27th Division left Dickebusch and moved to trenches at St Eloi, just to the south of Ypres where they stayed until relieved on 30th January. As A Company was being guided to their new trenches on 28th January they took a wrong turning and found themselves out in the open in bright moonlight. The enemy opened fire on them and they immediately sustained twelve casualties. They took cover in a nearby disused trench and the relief was not completed until the morning. One of their casualties on this day was Francis Bowden. |
